More Than School Mathematics

AMC 8 is an MAA mathematics problem-solving competition for students in Grade 8 and below. Every eligible student takes the same 25-question exam. Success depends on connecting foundational knowledge to unfamiliar problems—not simply memorizing formulas or working faster.

Arithmetic & Algebra

Fractions, percentages, ratios, rates, averages, expressions, equations, patterns, and coordinates.

Geometry

Angles, area, circles, volume, the Pythagorean theorem, coordinates, and spatial visualization.

Number Theory

Divisibility, primes, factors, multiples, remainders, digits, parity, and numerical patterns.

Counting & Probability

Systematic listing, multiplication principle, case analysis, foundational probability, and structure.

2027 Competition at a Glance

The official competition must be administered in person at an approved competition location. Digital describes the response platform—not an at-home competition.

Each correct answer earns 1 point. Incorrect and blank answers receive 0 points, with no additional penalty. Calculators are not allowed.

Is AMC 8 the Right Starting Point?

Prior competition experience is not required, but placement should not be based on grade level or school grades alone. A diagnostic helps identify whether a student should begin with Pre-AMC, Foundation, Sprint, or Advanced preparation.

Arithmetic Readiness

Stable work with integers, fractions, decimals, percentages, and ratios.

Algebraic Thinking

Ability to represent relationships using unknowns, tables, patterns, or equations.

Reading & Modeling

Ability to extract conditions from English problems and use diagrams or lists.

Independence & Pace

Willingness to attempt unfamiliar problems and continue working under a time limit.

Younger students may participate. Fourth- or fifth-grade students can take AMC 8 if they meet official eligibility rules, but everyone takes the same exam. For younger students, experience and measurable progress are usually better goals than applying eighth-grade award expectations.

AMC 8 does not directly qualify students for AIME. The future qualification pathway is AMC 8 → AMC 10/12 → reach that year’s AIME cutoff → AIME.

Registration Facts for Families

Find a Competition Location

First ask whether the student’s school is hosting. When the current-season search opens, families may use MAA’s official competition-location search and contact locations directly.

Confirm the Details

Each location sets its own parent deadline, fee, session, format, outside-student policy, and capacity within the official Competition Week.

Wait for Approval

A seat is secured only after the location’s Competition Manager approves the student’s registration and assigns a license.

Course enrollment and competition registration are separate. The host fees shown on MAA’s website are not universal per-student parent fees. XNEW should not be assumed to be an official 2027 competition location unless a later announcement confirms it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a student join without competition experience?

Yes, but a diagnostic is recommended. Students should have reasonably stable fractions and ratios, foundational geometry, English mathematical reading, and the ability to work independently.

Is AMC 8 an at-home online competition?

No. Digital AMC 8 still requires in-person proctoring at an approved competition location. Remote proctoring is prohibited.

What score earns Honor Roll or DHR?

There is no fixed 2027 cutoff in advance. Honor Roll and Distinguished Honor Roll thresholds change with each year’s score distribution and must be confirmed after results are released.

Does the course only drill official problems?

No. Official problems are used within a sequence of knowledge instruction, models, strategy comparison, variations, error review, and timed practice.

Does completing the course guarantee an award?

No. The course improves knowledge, strategy, and consistency, while results also depend on that year’s difficulty, score distribution, and the student’s performance on competition day.
