2027 COMPETITION PREPARATION
Math Kangaroo
Build number sense, logic, geometry, spatial reasoning, and confidence with unfamiliar problems.
More Than Faster Calculation
Math Kangaroo is an international mathematical-thinking competition for K–12 students. It places familiar school mathematics inside pictures, stories, patterns, and multi-condition problems—asking students to observe, model, choose a strategy, and verify their answer independently.
Think Flexibly
Use diagrams, lists, classification, elimination, testing, and working backward.
Read Mathematically
Extract conditions from English word problems and connect information across multiple steps.
Grow with Confidence
Develop patience, independence, and confidence when facing unfamiliar challenges.
Is Math Kangaroo a Good Fit?
Competition experience is not required. We look at four areas before recommending a level.
Mathematical Foundation
Age-appropriate number sense, operations, and basic geometry.
English Reading
Ability to understand short problems and answer choices independently.
Thinking Habits
Willingness to draw, test, eliminate, and keep trying.
Independence
Readiness to work without a teacher explaining each question.
Kindergarten students may participate by taking the Grade 1 test, but must be able to read and answer independently.
What Students Learn
- Number sense and operations
- Patterns and logical reasoning
- Geometry and spatial visualization
- Counting and multistep word problems
- English mathematical reading
- Time management and checking habits
Our Preparation Cycle
Foundations → Thinking Strategies → Topic Practice → Error Review → Timed Practice
The course is not simply past-paper drilling. Students learn why a strategy works, practice it in varied situations, and use feedback to strengthen problem-solving habits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can beginners join?
Yes. Math Kangaroo is an excellent introduction to math competitions. Students should have age-appropriate number sense, basic English reading ability, and the willingness to try independently.
Is this course only past-paper practice?
No. Official problems are used, but the course builds foundational knowledge and thinking strategies first, followed by topic practice, variations, error review, and timed simulations.
Does course enrollment register my child for the competition?
No. Parents complete official registration separately through Math Kangaroo USA. We can explain the process and provide deadline reminders, but center selection and payment are completed by the family.
Does the course guarantee an award?
No. The course improves knowledge, strategies, and readiness, while awards depend on the year’s test difficulty, score distribution, and the student’s performance on competition day.
What comes after Math Kangaroo?
Younger students may continue to a higher Math Kangaroo level or mathematical-thinking course. Strong students in Grades 4–6 may progress to Pre-AMC or AMC 8 Foundation after building the required algebra, geometry, number theory, counting, and probability foundations.
Find the Right Starting Point
